What is a Protector?

A Protector is an independent third party given the authority under the trust agreement to undertake certain important duties and responsibilities such as the right: To remove the trustee, to change the trust jurisdiction, to amend the trust agreement and in some cases add or remove beneficiaries, subject to certain restrictions. The protector, as its name indicates, enhances the protection a family needs, ensures that the intent of the settlor in the administration of the trust is fulfilled, while balancing the powers of the trustee.
